From may 2004 the legal curency in Surinam is the Surinamese Dollar, US dollars and Euro’s are also accepted.
ATMs
With most of the bank and credit cards money can be retrieved on the following locations;
- All ATMs machines of the RBTT bank(only Surinamese dollars)
- Main office RBTT bank(church square Paramaribo). Inside the bank you can buy US dollars or Euro’s you have to bring your passport with you. Exchange rate is lower than at a Cambio

At all banks and cambio’s you have to pay a admission fee of 3%
Credit card
Credit cards are not much used in Surinam some off the bigger hotels, travel agencies will except American Express or MasterCard.
Taking money with you
There are two ways to take money with you traveler checks or cash money.
When you take cash money with you there is a risk the best thing to do is buy a money belt to store your money. You wear this belt like a regular belt so it will not be noticed.
If possible you can divided your money each person can wear his own money belt.
It is possible to get a Insurance for your money the trouble is most of the Insurance companie’s will not insure the total amount off the money you take with you. For more information contact your local bank or travel agency.
Change money
If you're going to change money always do this at a bank or cambio never change money on the street there are also counter fitters in Surinam so becare ful.
Bank
When you change money at the bank the exchange rate is lower than at the cambio. Cambio’s in Surinam are modern and can be trusted.
Tip: when you change money take a amount that you will need for the coming days when your carry too much money your vulnerable. When you change money always count it the moment it is handed to you. When you leave the Cambio and you count your money outside and something is not alright then there is one thing left for you to do and that is count your losses.
Taking money back home
When you leave Surinam and you still have money left then you can change it at the bank or cambio. Banks out side Surinam don’t except Surinamese money.
