Some possibilities for recreation in Surinam.
 

In Surinam there are a number of plantations where you can enjoy yourself for instant the plantation Republic, four children and Berseba. After the abolition the slaves who worked on the plantations became owner of these plantations. Until today the descendants of these slaves can claim a piece of land. The land will never be owned by them but at all times remain the property of the foundation that manages the plantation. There is also the possibility for non descendants to buy a piece of land (lot) bud again the ownership of the land remains in the hands of the foundation. The plantations are not only used for weekend and week recreation, descendants are still living on the plantation so respect their standards and values and keep the plantations clean.

Berseba

BersebaAt Berseba, you can rent a cottage for a beautiful weekend or longer. The beautiful nature and siren peace will be a revelation for you. There is also the opportunity for swimming or fishing in one of the creeks with running water. you will have to take food, drinks, pots and pans with you. At Beersheba and vicinity there are a number of small shops, but you will not find a restaurants or any other entertainment. For nature lovers and painters among you a visit to this plantation is recommended.

Republic

RepubliekThe plantation Republic is also owned by the descendants of the slaves who worked on this plantation and is also managed by a foundation. To our knowledge there is no possibility to rent a house unless it is a private initiative. In the vicinity of Republic there are few shops.

 

 

Four Children

4-kinderenThe plantation four children also offers an oasis of quietness and beautiful nature, you can swim and fish in one of the creeks. Jews Savannah

JodensavanneThree centuries ago Jews Savannah wash a flourishing settlement and a safe haven for Sephardic Jews who had fled from Spain and Portugal to escape persecution. In the mid of the seventeenth century they came directly or through Amsterdam, Italy, Brazil, Cayenne and other places to Suriname and settled at the Jews Savannah. The plantations are located nearby Zanderij airport approximately one hour drive from Paramaribo. Take the exit Republic and you will drive directly to Republic, Bersheba and four children. To go to Jews Savannah you have to follow Highway at the end you will see Paranam there you must take the road to Afobaka. At the second turn left you take the road to Powaka, Jews Savannah and Blakawatra. When you passed the Carolina bridge, and Pierre kondre turn right at the sign Jews Savannah, congratulation you found it.

Surinam Railway station

On the way to the airport Zanderij at Onverwacht there are still the remains of a railway that once transported people from Paramaribo to west Surinam. Although the railway no longer exist in Surinam the employees are still employed by the national railway foundation. At the railway station Onverwacht you can still find the remains of the Surinamese railway company.

 Groningen

woning-district-commissarisThe village Groningen, named after the city Groningen in the Netherlands, is a small village with old colonial houses. the trip to Groningen via Lijding is beautiful. On the way to Uitkijk you will pass the largest banana plantation of Surinam, this plantation also exports to Europe. In Groningen home of the district commissioner of Saramacca you will find beautiful old colonial buildings. At the river there is a nice little restaurant.

 

 Road to sea

Weg-naar-zee-(2)In Paramaribo you will find the Fernades street better known as road to sea(weg naar Zee). At the end of this road there is a Hindu temple and traditional burning ground. The temple is a pilgrimage for the Hindu people of Suriname and the statues in the temple are donations. At the cremation site which is one kilometer away from the temple cremations are carried out in a traditional way.

 

 Commewijne

Commewijne-bosje)Commewijne District is located across the Suriname River, and is connected to the Paramaribo by the Bosje Bridge (named after former President Jules Wijdenbosch). In the district Commewijne There are several plantations and Fort Amsterdam, an old fortification from the colonial period. The Tamaredjoweg located across the bridge in the district Commewijne is the connection to the village Moengo, Albina and French Guiana.

 

Surinam river

Braamspunt is located at the estuary of the Suriname River it has a small sandy beach, the color of the water is like everywhere else in Surinam brown. On the banks of the Commewijne river are several plantation. One of them is Fredreriksdorp recently completely restored. At the estuary of the Commewijne River you can see river dolphins.

 

 White Beach

White-Beach1Forty five minutes drive from Paramaribo on the banks of the Surinam river there is a artificial beach called White Beach. At WB you can rent a Pina hut or cabin. You are allowed to stay on WB from nine o clock am till 1900 pm ore from 19.00 pm till 0.900 am. The Pina hut is equipped with wooden benches table and electricity(110 volt) for 1 SRD you can rent extra chairs. It is allowed to take food, drink and BBQ with you it is not necessary because on WB you will find a restaurant and several bars. Swimming water is clean and to keep the Piranah away there are nets who marks the swimming area. The instructions of the present live guards have to be obeyed if not you will be removed. It is not allowed to take food or drinks in to the water. Pina huts can be rend at WB and Paramaribo.

Overbridge

Overbridge_1One and a half hour drive from Paramaribo on the banks of the Surinam River you will find Over Bridge. Like White Beach Overbridge is also a artificial beach. There is the possibility to rent a Pina hut or cabin at the beach you have a beautiful view of the Suriname River. On Over Bridge you will find a Restaurant and bar.

 

 

Oase

OaseOasis is a private club where only members are allowed to come. To join the club you must be nominated by two members After you been interviewed by the ballot committee and everything is aright you can become a member. Oasis is located in the district, Zorg and Hope and offers the opportunity to swim, gym, tennis and various other sports. There is a restaurant and bar snack and a drink can be consumed. The whole thing looks neat and well maintained.

Fort Zeelandia

ZeelandiaFort Zeelandia on the bank of the Suriname River is named after the Dutch province Zeeland. In 1667 Admiral Abraham Crijnsen captured the fort on the English. The fort later served as barracks and prison. In 1982 the fort was headquarters of the Surinamese National Army and opponents of the military regime were imprisoned at the fort. A black page in the history of the fort is the killing of 15 opponents of the Bouterse regime on December 8 1982.

More and more tourist are coming to Surinam nightlife in Paramaribo is increasing. There are a plenty of clubs, bars and restaurants.

Vat

't-vat‘t Vat is one of the most famous cafe restaurant of Paramaribo. This former bus stations is transformed into a cafe restaurant. You can eat a snack or have a drink in the tourist season there is live music. After the tourist season there is only live music in the weekends and on public holidays. The café restaurant t Vat is located at the SUP area nearby the Torarica hotel.

 

 

 Torarica

ToraricaOne of the oldest hotels in Surinam named after the former capital of Surinam Torarica. At the Torarica hotel you can book a room or enjoy a stay at the bar or casino. There is also a pier with a teahouse and several other accommodations. The Torarica hotel is also located in the SUB area.
