DOGS AND CATS

collie 6You can take your dog cat or any other pet to Surinam. The status of a pet in Surinam is different than in other countries, for example a dog is not seen as a part of the family but as an animal intended to protect the house. Most dogs are not allowed to come in to the house the location of the dog, whether or not chained is in the yard.

Slowly there is a slide change in the way Surinamese look at dogs and cats pedigree dogs and cats are imported from western countries and are often seen as a part of the family. Surinamese people will not pet their cat or dog for them it is a dirty thing to do. If it happens they will like to wash their hands. Not that strange because pets are living outside.

Taking the dog for a walk is not without any risk, in most of the western countries it is custom to let the dog run loose at the appropriate places. In Suriname even if there is a ditch around a field be careful, these locks are usually the territory of the caiman or Bomma better known as the Python. Near rivers you also have to be careful that there are no piranha. Also be careful in areas with dense shrubs and bushes you have to look out for possible presence of snakes. When you take your dog for a walk be more alert the best thing to do is using a dog leash.

Animal transportation

Animal Transport – a separate department at KLM Cargo – is one of KLM's specialties. They were the first airline ever to transport live animals. That was in 1924, when a bull named Nico was flown from Rotterdam to Paris. KLM is known as one of the best and largest animal transporters in the world. Zoo animals, livestock, horses, ornamental fish, dogs and cats, and some of the craziest animals you can imagine all go onboard. Most animals travel in the cargo hold of combination (passenger and cargo) aircraft, but some travel in a separate aircraft accompanied by specialized animal stewards. KLM even has a special hotel for all the animals.

KLM animal hotel

The KLM Cargo Animal Hotel at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the world's largest and most modern Animal hotel specially designed for the temporary reception and care of animals transported by KLM. The Animal hotel is also the only one in the world that is run by an airline. All animals in preparation for a flight have the ability to eat, drink and relax in a comfortable surrounding and taking care of by specially trained animal handlers. At the animal hotel they work 24 hours a day and there is a strict hygiene and high quality this is very important for animals to stay healthy. Before the animals may be transported, they must have the proper licenses to travel. For any animal that is transported it is essential that these health certificates are present.

Special trained animal handlers

Taking care of animals requires much knowledge and dedication. For this all employees of the KLM Cargo Animal Hotel have to follow a special training. The employees will follow veterinary courses at the University of Utrecht, and they have to attend lectures on veterinary inspections and follow courses at the Amsterdam Zoo Artis.

Animals handlers that flies with the animals also get a flight safety training. The animal handlers take cares of the animals like their own animals this is also necessary because it makes the animals more comfortable in an unknown environment. unique for an airline company is  that the KLM Cargo Animal Hotel have a day care for dogs. The animal handlers are constantly watching the animals and their behavior so that immediate action can be taken if an animal gets sick. A team of veterinarians and animal specialists can always be called when the animals are sick. On board an aircraft animal handlers have access to the stables where horses and large zoo animals are transported. During takeoff and landing the animal handlers are very close to the animals so if necessary they can calm them down and to check how the animal is behaving. On board the cargo area where the animals are transported the proper temperature is set so that during the flight the animals do not get too hot or too cold. This is also strictly controlled by the crew on board the aircraft.

Transportation of dogs and cats

Worldwide KLM transports over 4000 dogs and cats each year with their owners who go on holiday or for example moving abroad. The dogs and cats are transported in a specially designed sky kennel. These sky kennels are made of plastic with metal doors. The dogs and cats are transported in a separate area of the aircraft. Again, the temperature in this area is constantly monitored so that animals do not get too hot or too cold. It is important that the sky kennels are large enough so that during the flight the animals can easily stand, sit, lie down and turn so that they travel comfortably. A travel tips for owners of pets is to let the dog or cat get used to the sky kennel let them sleep eat or drink in the sky kennel this way the pets are much more at ease during the flight because they are accustomed to the sky kennel.
